The network of underground piping that runs along the course of a former stream on Creek Drive has eroded, creating sinkholes in many residents’ front lawns ranging in size from a few feet to small canyons several yards across and deep.
City Council approved spending $1,088,000 to replace the damaged corrugated steel pipes with concrete and plastic piping.
Director of Public Works Dena Mezger told the council there is a “ticking bomb” of corrugated steel pipe, about 50 miles or more of which is rusting underground. Some of it is only found when it collapses, she said.
The site is located on Kipp, about one-tenth of a mile south of Hedberg. Work is projected to be completed by the end of Wednesday.
Also, the existing 18-inch corrugated metal storm sewer pipe will be replaced with an 18-inch reinforced concrete pipe.
Funding will come from the 2005 special purpose local option sales tax.
