Ziplock is a brand of reusable, re-sealable zipper storage bags and containers originally developed and test marketed by The Dow Chemical Company in 1968, and now produced by S. C. Johnson & Son. The plastic bags and containers come in different sizes for use with different products. The brand offers sandwich bags, snack bags and other bags for various purposes.


In 1951, a company called Flexigrip, Inc. was formed to develop and market a plastic zipper, by the same name, based on a set of patents, which it had purchased, of which the inventor was Borge Madsen. The initial products for the Flexigrip and other plastic zippers (such as the sliderless zippers (toptite) that were developed by Flexigrip) were looseleaf binder inserts and flat briefcases. Thereafter, the marketing efforts were directed at packaging products in plastic zipper bags, which turned out to be the principal market for the  products. In 1961, Flexigrip, Inc. obtained from a Japanese company, Seisan Nippon Sha, who invented the Minigrip-type plastic zipper bag, exclusive manufacturing and selling rights for the United States, based on a series of plastic zipper Seisan patents. A company by the same name was formed to produce and market Minigrip bags. In or about 1964, Minigrip, Inc. negotiated an exclusive license for the grocery trade (supermarkets) with Dow Chemical Company for the product. It turned out to be enormously successful.

At that time, plastic bags were being produced in 25 countries at a line speed of 30 feet per minute, but none were being sold to consumers because they were too expensive to produce. Dow assigned one of their inventors, R. Douglas Behr, to develop a high-speed, efficient process. Having little prior experience in plastics, the task was daunting for Behr but he passed everyone in the world within a year. As he improved the process and increased line speeds to 60, then 90, then 150 and finally 300 feet per minute in 1972, he had to design new equipment. Some was patented and some was kept as Trade Secrets by Dow.

Eventually, other research and production personnel contributed to the process development, but Behr continued to be the leading researcher until he retired in 1993 as a senior Associate Scientist. At that time the research building was "Dedicated in Recognition of the Distinguished Career of R. Douglas Behr".

In 1978, Minigrip was acquired by Signode, Inc. and became a subsidiary of that company. In 1986, Signode and Dow formed a company, namely Zippak, to develop zipper bags for food products. In 1987, ITW acquired Signode, and Minigrip became a subsidiary of ITW.

In 1991, ITW acquired Dow's interest in Zippak so that Zippak became a fully owned subsidiary of ITW. Zippak produces plastic zippers for the food packaging market. Among Ziploc and Zippak's competitors are Presto, a subsidiary of Reynolds, and Pactiv. From the time of inception till today, Flexigrip/Minigrip/Zippak/Dow/Dow Brands have obtained over 300 patents for plastic zippers, zipper bags, and methods and machinery of producing the same. In 1995, Hefty came out with a sliding zipper bag.

In 1997 Dow Chemical sold the rights of DowBrands, which included Ziploc, to S. C. Johnson for between .3 and .7 billion. Zip-Pak developed Polypropylene compatible zippers in 2003.

The first step:

Before gluing the lashes on, please check and size the lashes. You have to make sure that the eyelashes are not too wide for your eye. Hold the eyelash strips up against your eyelid, and trim them down on the sides if it is necessary.

If you feel the eyelashes are too long for your taste, please consider trimming the individual lashes down to achieve more natural feeling. Eyelashes should be longer toward the outer corner of your eyes.

The second step:

Using an applicator or brush to apply the lash glue to the outer seam of the eyelash strip. Make sure the glue to dry for a moment before applying it to eyelashes.

You also can squeeze a thin line of eyelash glue onto your hand. Then, gently run the outer seam of the lash strip along it.

The third step:

Place the eyelash strip on your eyelid, make it close to your natural eyelashes. Bring the strip down from above, not from the front. This is to ensure that you get close to your lashline.

The fourth step:

Make the glue dry naturally. When the strip is in place, you do not need to press or hold it.

The fifth step:

Apply mascara to your lashes. This will help to blend your natural eyelashes with the false ones, achieving a more natural feeling. You can use black, brown, or dark gray mascara.

The sixth step:

Apply liquid eyeliner along your upper lids. Make sure to fill in any gaps between the false lashes and your own to make them look more natural. Use black, brown, or dark gray liner.

How To Apply False Eyelashes

1. After removing eyelash from tray, hold it at both ends with your fingers and bend it several times in a "U" shape to get it flexible.

2. Look into a mirror, either on the wall or placed on a countertop. Bring lash to eyelid as close to your lash line as possible, following its natural curve. Start from the outer corner first, making sure they are the right size for your eyes and not too big. Then, press in place. If lash is too long, remove it from eyelid and trim with scissors along the outer edge. Adjust the lashes with your fingertips.


Lift one eyelash out of the eyelashes package box. Holding it with both hands at the ends of the lashes, place it up to your eyelids next to your own lashes. You will most likely find the eyelashes are too wide for your eyes. Snip off a few hairs at one end and test it again. it is important not to have the false eyelashes too wide because the ends will stick into the eyelid and feel very uncomfortable and irritating! When cut and applied correctly, you will not even know you have them on. Now trim the other pair to match.


The false eyelashes may be too long also... so trim the length shorter -not too much- you can always go back and cut more later. Point the end of the scissors into the tips of the eyelashes and snip into the lash. Do not cut across in one swoop as you do not want an even cut... they look more natural when uneven.

5. Use a stick, or a tooth pick, to apply a thin coat of lash adhesive along the edge of the strip lash.

6. Wait several seconds to allow the glue to become "tacky", looking down into the mirror, Place the lashes as close to your own as possible, following the natural curve along its length. Adjust using tweezers or finger tips while the glue is still pliable then apply lash to eyelid. Note: White adhesive will become clear once it dries. After applying both false lashes, blend your natural lashes into them. You can do this with your fingers or a small eyelash or eyebrow brush or an eyelash curler.

7. Let the glue dry, then apply eye makeup. You may find your new lashes dramatic enough without mascara, so take a good look in the mirror first. If needed, you could apply a dark eyeliner to camouflage the line of the fake lashes and then apply your mascara. The mascara will help blend your own lashes with the fake ones, and make your eyes look fuller an larger.

There are a variety of factors at play. Here are a few in not particular order of importance but all of which must be considered.
1. Environmental Conditions: Are there restrictions in terms of pipe preparation.? For example, is it even possible to get down to white metal by sandblasting? What if the existing coating is asbestos, or lead paint? Is the area so isolated that a generator or powered equipment cannot be made available? What about UV exposure? Moisture? Extreme ambient temperature conditions? Extreme subsurface conditions such as rocks, erosion, soil conditions, next to railroad tracks, mechanical conditions due to soil impaction, unstable ground?
2. Preparation: To what NACE standard do I need to prepare the pipe for an appropriate coating? As mentioned above, is it even possible based on conditions to prepare the pipe to a particular NACE standard?
3. Experience of the crew applying the coating: This is a huge one and often the principle reason for coatings failure. Is the coating material so complex that an experienced crew must be on hand to do the application? Most often than not, the experience of the applications crew is lacking and for some of the more involved coatings procedures the crew contributes to coatings failure.
4. Performance: Clearly everyone wants the coating to last forever. Does the coatings manufacturer have a track record whereby they can exhibit actual field performance to support their coatings material? Do the actual coatings specifications match the external conditions? Unfortunately, there are examples where coatings manufacturer's have not run appropriate ASTM testing methods on the material they are recommending for certain applications. The pipe owner must be able to differentiate science from mythology.
