An exciting and vital piece to the fuel bladder manufacturing process, an autoclave, should arrive within the next three weeks from a company that completely refurbished it. "It's like a brand new autoclave. I mean, they literally took a previously used shell, they blasted it back to bare steal, and then they rebuilt it from the ground up," he said. "For all intents and purposes, it's a new autoclave. It has a new control system, new valves, new heat exchanger, new everything."
“In the past there has been a lot of speculation on the efficacy of pre-treating food waste by an autoclave,” Christian Toll, AeroThermal’s CEO. AeroThermal’s testing facility at its laboratory and demonstrator autoclave in Poole, Dorset, is led by Dr Nigel Bailey and Dr Zhenjiang Wang. AeroThermal added that the programme of experiments builds its work on the EU funded Valorgas project, in conjunction with Southampton University, where optimisation of food waste AD plant performance was explored.
This autoclave will be used to cure the very large wing for Boeing’s 777x aircraft. Weighing more than 1 million lb/453,592 kg, ASC says this Econoclave will become the largest composites autoclave in the world when it is finally commissioned in early 2016.
“At time of passing into the anteroom, the double-bagged waste is placed inside a third autoclave-specific bag. An autoclave rubber band is used to secure the opening. The bag is not twisted, goose necked, or taped to ensure the bag is able to breathe for proper autoclaving. The autoclave bag is externally wiped with bleach wipes prior to being placed in a covered waste container outside the anteroom. Once the bag is placed inside a barrel and the top is secured, the outside of the barrel is wiped down with bleach wipes (Lowe, 2014). To autoclave the waste, the bags are removed from the barrel and placed directly into the autoclave. The empty barrel is wiped down with bleach wipes, including both sides of the barrel lid. The inside of the barrel is then sprayed with a 1:10 dilution of bleach or other approved disinfectant. Environmental services personnel wear protective suits, booties, double gloves, head covering, face shield, and mask during the entire autoclaving process” (Lowe, 2014).
